Research Associate in Computational Structural Biology and Chemistry

Job Ref: 1317412

Closing date: 21 April 2013

University College London
Division of Biosciences
Research Department of Structural and Molecular Biology

Full time, Grade 7

Salary (inclusive of London allowance): £32,375 to £35,101 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the group of Professor Steve Perkins. The structural biology group works on solution structural determinations of antibodies and other immune proteins.

The project will work on developing and implementing exciting new computational methods to determine atomistic models that best fit X-ray and neutron scattering data from macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies. These new procedures will be developed in collaboration with Bath University (surfactants and polymers), King's College London (drug-delivery nanoparticles), Nottingham University (disordered proteins), and the ISIS neutron facility at Harwell Oxford. The project is also collaboration with researchers in the USA. The successful candidate will write and communicate results as scientific papers.

The post is available from 1st May 2013 for 4 years in the first instance and is funded by a grant from the EPSRC, matched by a corresponding grant from the NSF to our collaborators in the USA.

Key Requirements

It is essential that candidates have a PhD or equivalent experience and a strong background in both computational methods and structural studies of biological or synthetic macromolecules.

Candidates should desirably have a good working knowledge of physical methods, modern programming languages, and software development environments.

Experience of assisting and supervising research students, would also be desirable.
