The Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is the UK's provider of large scale inter-disciplinary research infrastructures and their supporting technologies, which enable UK researchers to investigate the world we live in and understand the building blocks of the Universe.

ISIS is a world leading facility for condensed matter research using neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, with a strong scientific user programme and extensive international links. ISIS currently operates 30 instruments and has recently been awarded another £21M to build 4 more.

Software is an essential part of all the ISIS instruments. The Mantid framework is an international collaboration between ISIS; the Spallation Neutron Source, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA; and Tessella PLC, an award winning scientific computing consultancy. Mantid provides a framework for next generation data analysis and visualisation.

We are looking for a scientific programmer who will make major contributions to the Mantid collaboration. You will need strong C++ skills to build and support this framework as part of our team of professional scientific developers. As part of the role you will:
* Develop core functionality for the Mantid project.
* Work with instrument scientists to support their data analysis needs.
* Document your work for users and other developers, and join the group testing of Mantid releases
* Maintain and extend the software development framework of Mantid.

Applicants should have a degree or equivalent experience in a numerate discipline and experience of developing software in C++ using object oriented techniques, preferably on both Windows and Unix platforms with good knowledge of development tools. Experience of other programming languages, e.g. Python, is also desirable as is previous experience of developing software in a scientific environment.

Salary is in the range £26,610 to £37,534 per annum, dependent on skills and ability. An excellent index linked pension scheme and generous leave allowance are also offered.
