There is a vacancy in my group for a permanent position to design and develop the experiment control flow and interfaces for the neutron instruments at ESS. Development would be done predominantly in Python.
Our office is based at the ESS' Data Management Software Centre (DMSC) in wonderful Copenhagen.

Data Acquisition Scientist or Software Engineer

The European Spallation Source ERIC, ESS, is hiring motivated and inspired people to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe. The ESS accelerator, target and experiments are based in the university city Lund, Sweden and our Data Management Software Centre (DMSC) is placed in Copenhagen, Denmark.

ESS is looking for a Data Acquisition Scientist or Software Engineer for the Experiment Control and Data Curation (ECDC) group. 

About the team
The tasks and responsibilities of the team include but are not limited to:
* providing the experiment control user interfaces for the visiting scientists
* streamlining the user experience to allow the scientists to focus on their scientific goals
* building and supporting the whole software data acquisition chain that users will be relying on to carry out their experiments efficiently and accurately
* supporting scientists using ESS for their controls and data acquisition needs
The ECDC team aims to produce the right tools for scientists to carry out cutting edge research, using all of the capabilities of our next generation neutron facility.

About the role
As the successful candidate and future Data Acquisition Scientist or Software Engineer you will together with the team:
* Define the requirements for experiment control, data acquisition and visualization at the experiment stations
* Develop software within the ESS software framework to deliver a system that gives access to the full scientific capabilities of ESS 
* Support visiting scientists and ESS staff in using the whole data acquisition chain and the experiment control framework
* Collaborate with colleagues within the ESS and other facilities world-wide
* Carry out software and hardware testing in lab environments and at partner facilities

About you
You can demonstrate programming experience in Python, C++ or a similar modern language as well as some of the following:
* A degree or relevant higher qualification in a STEM or software-related subject
* Familiarity with one or more experimental techniques used at neutron or synchrotron facilities
* Proven skills in developing user friendly UIs
* Experience with collection, processing or analysis of data from experiments or measurements
* Experience with data streaming or message broker systems, such as Apache Kafka
* Experience in building, testing and deploying software in a professional manner
* Ability to work efficiently on Linux operating systems
* Track record of working as part of a larger team or collaboration
* The role calls for an interest in team working in a cross-cultural environment and good interpersonal skills.

Duration & Location
