The Photon Science Division of NSLS-II at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding scientist to become the Group Leader in Scientific Computing & Data Acquisition, Data Management, Data Analysis.. The position will establish a cutting-edge scientific computing program in support of experimental data collection, analysis and data management at National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) beamlines.

Responsibilities of this position include: (a) leading a group of scientists and engineers to meet the computing needs at NSLS-II beamlines, (b) collaborating with beamline scientists to define and implement the best strategies and approaches in data acquisition, scientific data handling, management, visualization, and analysis for the purpose of enhancing scientific productivity and impact at NSLS-II, and (c) planning and developing scientific data storage and processing strategies that anticipates the growing needs of the NSLS-II.

The position classification offered will be commensurate with the candidate’s depth and breadth of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  *   Ph.D. in computer science, physics, or related scientific field
  *   At least seven (7) years of experience in the field of scientific computing, data acquisition, or analysis including relevant supervisory experience.
  *   A well-recognized set of accomplishments in at least one  relevant  field of expertise
  *   An up-to-date knowledge in related scientific data collection, data management, and data analysis concepts
  *   A track record and demonstrated organizational, managerial, and leadership skills in the context of a major scientific or technical project.  A track record of delivering workable software solutions in scientific computing.
  *   Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to be able to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  *   Experience in data acquisition and analysis programs at a synchrotron light source, neutron source or other major scientific user facility.
  *   First-hand experience with several  software development processes as developer or leader. The ability to motivate a development team to use them.
  *   Experience contributing to  open-source software projects
  *   Experience in parallel processing in a cluster environment for high performance computing.
  *   A working knowledge of emerging tools and practices for reproducible science and open science
  *   Knowledge and experience in large data manipulation and /or data management techniques suitable for both data visualization and data storage.
  *   Experience in project planning and execution, and in budget and resource management.
  *   Twelve (12) or more years of experience in the field.
