The starting date will be January 1st 2013.<br><br>The newly established section Neutrons and X-rays for Materials Physics (NEXMAP) at the Department of Physics focuses on gaining knowledge on fundamental properties of materials through scattering experiments conducted at Large Scale Neutron and X-ray facilities around the world, e.g. the European Spallation Source (ESS), the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source (PSI), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the European X-ray Laser Project (E-XFEL) to name a few. Development of instruments, software for virtual experiments and novel data analysis methods play a key role in this effort.<br><br>ESS will be the brightest source of neutrons in the world for scientific research. Located in Lund, Sweden, and co-hosted by both Sweden and Denmark ESS is funded and operated by 17 European countries. The construction is to start in 2013 and it is planned to become operational in 2019. The unique capabilities of the ESS will lead to world leading experimental stations, and will set new standards for e.g. dynamic neutron imaging studies of relevance to a wide range of scientific areas.<br><br><b>The PhD Project<br></b>The project will focus on developing a new 3D neutron diffraction technique (3DND) for characterization of the individual structural and magnetic domains in materials such as metals, ceramics, semiconductors and geological materials. The local, microscopic phenomena in these materials have strong influence on the macroscopic behavior, such as conducting paths, magnetization behaviors, ductility, crack propagation and growth. Consequently, the 3DND methodology will lead to a better understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of geological and modern industrial materials.<br><br>The contents of this project are very versatile, including: virtual experiments (simulations), development of a new software platform for 3DND, conducting experiments at beamlines at various neutron facilities, data analysis and interpretation of data.<br><br>The successful candidate will be based at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, close to Copenhagen, with frequent travel abroad to Neutron facilities. <br><br><b>Qualifications</b><br><br><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> The applicant should have a strong computational background with experience in programming in python/C++/C programming languages.<br></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> Familiar with working on UNIX platforms.<br></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> MSc degree in Engineering Science, Physics or Chemistry, with a solid background in mathematics.<br></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> Prior knowledge in crystallography is an asset but not required.<br></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> Able to work independently and to plan and carry out complicated tasks, while also being part of a dynamic group.<br></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.<br></div><div><br></div><b>Approval and Enrolment </b><br>The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
